That was a great movie… Actually I am talking tennis-the sun is out, its not too hot (yet!) and my racquet is collecting dust in the trunk of my car. I used to be a big tennis buff, “I was on the team in High School”, I would boast. I used to think I had a pretty mean backhand, and I rally enjoyed the game. Playing tennis competitively can be very difficult, as I remember it was hit or miss if I was “on” that day. It is most definitely a frustrating game. But it is also a game of skill, patience, and a well known universal sport. Etiquette and grace in tennis is also important, I’ve seen many a temper lost over a little yellow ball. Tennis is also fascinating to watch on the television, man there are some greats out there. But it is just as enjoyable to play with friends, colleagues, family.
Doubles is an option, a cool thing to do to get together with friends, but so is playing by yourself with a ball machine or even a wall at the park. I always found it kind of therapeutic, listening to that whack against the concrete.
I like to think tennis is the type of game that if you “don’t use it, you lose it.” Much like golf, it is a self instructing sport, the more you play the better you get. And if you haven’t picked up a racquet in a while, well it can be tough. Spring is an awesome time to bring back your game. I hope to get out there as soon as possible. Whether you are playing for sheer fun or are playing in a tourney or league, wear that sunscreen!
