Ettiqute at the Gym

This is a subject that doen’t come up too often, as I believe most people are courteous when at their exercise facility or out and about hiking, biking, etc. It’s common sense to stay on the designated trails or to ring your bell if you are coming up behind a slow walker or group while on your bike.  Saying “on your right!” can help prevent collisions and we can all be on our merry way, safely and kindly.  At the gym, however, it can be a different story.  Here are few scenarios that come to mind. The sweaty really tall guy who simply steps away from the machine when he is done with a mammoth workout, leaving behind a nice pool of sweat for the next person. Or how about the classic “hog”…the person who stays on a machine or uses equiptment for way to long, never thinking twice there might be others waiting for a turn.  I also think its rude when people come late or leave early in a group exercise setting, I know we all have our reasons but it can be awfully distracting to the instructor and others in the class.  The gym or club is a great place for everyone, it is part of the community.  Sharing the energy in the room can be a great workout motivator. A gentle reminder of what our mothers taught us can make a more positive experience for everyone, even while sweating our tails off.
