IS THE CLINIC FOR ME?
The clinic is designed for those relatively new to mountain biking, or those who lack the confidence and skills to feel comfortable out on the trails. The clinic will serve as a good introduction to mountain biking, but is not intended as an introduction to cycling for complete beginners. It is necessary to have some basic cycling experience – you must know how to use the brakes and change gears (even if not particularly well), be able to get in and out of clipless pedals (if you have them, and it’s highly recommended that you do), be comfortable riding on the road in a small group in light traffic, and have a basic level of aerobic fitness as we will be climbing and descending some relatively steep hills. You don’t need to be super fit as we’ll be taking lots of breaks, but you need to be able to get up some short hills. If you have never ridden a bike before we suggest you contact us for some initial one-on-one instruction before attending a clinic.
You must wear a properly fitting helmet, sign a waiver, and be at least 16 years of age.
YOU WILL NEED:
- A reasonable quality mountain bike, preferably with suspension, in good working order. If in doubt, come in and have us check it out 2-3 days before the clinic, or take it to a bike shop for some attention. Other than putting air in the tires we won’t have the time, or the equipment, to service your bike on the morning of the clinic, so make sure it’s working well.
- Bike clothing appropriate to the weather. It’s been a hot summer, but long sleeves and pants provide some degree of knee and elbow protection during low speed tumbles, so wear them if the weather allows. Wear knee and elbow pads, if you have them and feel comfortable riding in them for short distances. Dress in layers that you can take off if it gets too hot.
- Rain jacket.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses.
- HELMETS ARE MANDATORY! NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Gloves (again – good protection in falls).
- 2 water bottles and/or a CamelBak. We will have a small supply of PowerBars, drink mix and water, but feel free to bring your own stuff.
- A sense of adventure and be willing to have some fun.
