The Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Conference, initiated in 2002 by the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Survivorship and the American Cancer Society’s Behavioral Research Center, brings together investigators, clinicians, and survivors to share and learn about the most up-to-date cancer survivorship research. In 2010, the
5th biennial conference is co-sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, LIVESTRONG, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Klika was selected to receive the honor based on his work in cancer rehabilitation exercise programming. Dr. Klika’s research has centered on aerobic exercise programming for cancer survivors and the use of exercise to prevent and relieve cancer related fatigue as well as to increase functionality. Dr. Klika along with colleague Kathleen Callahan, started the Aspen Cancer Survivor Center located at the Aspen Club and Spa in 2005 and have worked with a number of local cancer survivors at little or no cost to provide exercise, nutritional and mental health counseling. A goal of the NCI meeting is to disseminate information presented the addition was neither complex nor abnormal) to the community at large.

My Dearest Amanda, Leah and Kasie,
I am sorry I am not able to be with you in Aspen tonight. If I was there, I would be able to tell you how proud I am of all of you. I would be able to tell you how in awe of I am of all of you. I would be able to tell you how inspired I am by all of you.
Ostensibly we are all here tonight to celebrate your individual journeys and to raise money and awareness for your ongoing stem cell therapy. This is all true and yet through your magnificent examples, we are also here for our own personal inspiration. We are here to remind ourselves of the multitude of possibilities in our own lives. We are here to remind ourselves that the naysayers, though plentiful in each of our lives, are rarely ever right. We are here to remind ourselves that what seems impossible is actually within our reach.
In this night, I hope that we will help each of you in you quest. In doing so, it will help each of us in our own individual quests. That is the amazing paradox at work here. We came here to help you, but in reality, you are truly helping us.
To keep this short, I want to finish up with one last thought . . . We love you, we believe in you and we are with you!

Exercise – Find Your Groove and Move!
Why should you exercise?
“Well little Miss Smarty-Pants, looks like you’ve gotten too big for your britches!” That’s what my Dad used to tell me. And it pretty much sums up the fix most of us have gotten ourselves into!
This smart modern world we’ve created is so automated we barely need to lift a finger or move a muscle to make things happen. Everything’s at our fingertips. We don’t have to walk to work, walk to the store or even walk across the room to change the dial on the TV set.
And, as a result of all our “smarty-pants” advances, our health is rapidly declining. Our muscles have atrophied and the majority of us – about 66% – are definitely “too big for our britches.”
Government Exercise Guidelines
To top it off, the government keeps shaking a finger, demanding we do something about it. They treat us like lame-brained children, lecturing us to start exercising and lose some weight.
But most of us have disobeyed. We rebelliously gain more weight and exercise less.
So what does Uncle Sam do about it? In case you haven’t heard, the government’s latest guidelines have gone and doubled our homework assignment. Instead of a half-hour’s worth of daily exercise, we’re now being told we need to exercise for an hour a day.
Some may be thinking, “Fat chance, Uncle Sam – why don’t you mind your own business!”
Now does that sound mature? Not in the least! So maybe it’s time for us to grow up and stop being so rebellious. As mature adults we should definitely be able to make rational exercise decisions all on our own. Right? Sure we can!
Taking Responsibility for Our Own Health
When you consider the fact that our not-too-distant ancestors used to have to farm the land, scrub their clothes, knead the bread and walk great distances to hunt for food, that one hour’s worth of daily exercise starts to sound like – “duh?” Of course our bodies need it!
Effective exercise has been proven to help protect you from:
- diabetes,
- heart disease,
- weight gain,
- backaches,
- cancer,
- migraines,
- infections,
- osteoporosis
- and many other health problems.
Plus, it’s an essential part of any weight loss program.
So how do we go about this exercise thing? First of all, repeat after me, “If I’m too busy to exercise, I’m just too busy!” And then again, “If I’m too busy to exercise, I’m just too busy!” Now once more, “If I’m too busy to exercise, I’m just too busy!”
There you have it. The rest is up to you. Find a place – a park, your neighborhood, the local gym or your own home – and rearrange your schedule to make it happen. Take it slow and easy, then gradually increase. But do something that gets your heart thumping and pumping.

What can you get out of daily exercise?
- It’s been shown to increase endorphins (feel-good hormones) and reduce depression. So, once you get moving, you’ll feel a lot better.
- According to studies, exercise can lower your biological age by 10 to 20 years. It also helps you lose weight and maintain weight loss. So you’ll look better too.
- Sensible regular physical activity decreases the possibility of injuries and strengthens your endurance and stamina. So you’ll be stronger and more invincible.
- Plus, daily exercise protects you from the host of degenerative, debilitating and deadly diseases named above. So you can create a much better future for yourself.
Wow! In that case, let’s all repeat again together, just one more time, “If I’m too busy to exercise, I’m just too busy!” Now, for your own benefit, find your groove and move!

What is the challenge?
The Aspen Club & Spa would like to challenge you to step up your fitness routine. If you are currently working out three days a week, why not challenge yourself to do four days a week? If you have been struggling to get into the gym, why not challenge yourself to come in two days a week. It is all up to you and what you would like to do for yourself. Why not put a financial challenge to it. If you miss a workout, donate to a charity. Challenge your friends to step it up!
How does it work?
Purchase a bid sheet from an Aspen Club & Spa representative. Commit to the number of days you will work out each week. Pledge a dollar amount that you will give to a charity for each day you miss.
The Aspen Club will post your pledge sheet on the wall for all to see. Each time you come in to work out, get a star from the front desk to mark your pledge sheet. The challenge will start March 17ththrough May 11th. Get in shape just in time for the 1st Annual Aspen Club & Spa Indoor Triatholon.

The organizers of the Moab Skinny Tire Festival asked me to pass this on. It’s a great event, which I’ve attended a number of times, and a good opportunity to get in some fun, early season training. Money raised goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Moab Cancer Treatment & Resource Center. I may or may not be able to attend, but I strongly encourage you to. | Team ESPN Kicks Off Winter X Games |

Dear Casey,Team ESPN will be hosting the second annual “Don’t Give Up” snowboard auction that will raise funds and awareness for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Blank snowboards, donated by O-Matic Snowboards for a second consecutive year, have been designed by professional athletes and highly acclaimed artists to be auctioned in conjunction with Winter X Games 12.
Seven boards will be up for bidding via silent auction from January 23 through 27 at three locations in Aspen: The Aspen Club, The Cantina and the Winter X Games 12 VIP tent at Buttermilk Mountain. An additional six boards will be available for bidding on eBay from January 24 through February 3.

Bidding will close on January 27 at 8 p.m. MT at The Aspen Club, 9 p.m. MT at the VIP tent and 10 p.m. MT at The Cantina. The eBay auction will feature boards painted by professional snowboarders Tricia Byrnes and Chanelle Sladics, and artists Noah, MarcoArt, Mark Richmond, and Hart & Huntington Tattoo Company’s Orlando. These boards will be available for bidding at http://stores.ebay.com/ESPN-Auctions concluding on February 3 at 7 p.m. MT. All winners of the silent and online auctions will be notified directly.

Deep in the heart of the 77,000 square foot facility known as The Aspen Club & Spa, there is a rehabilitation center unlike any other. If you are looking for a hospital setting, you won’t find it here. Patients can expect unique one on one hands-on attention from a team that has “seen it all” and will help return the patient stronger and more educated about their overall health and well-being than they were before. At The Aspen Club Sports Medicine Institute and Brown Chiropractic, a patient will experience a place that provides “one-stop shopping” for health needs in a serene and majestic arena.
The clinic boasts four highly trained physical therapists, a chiropractor and a variety of therapy aides and personal trainers that work as a team to bring the valley’s athletic community the extensive knowledge and physical therapy they need after an injury. In the 11-room facility, patients won’t stop at rehabilitation but instead progress with tools such as physiology, stress and aerobic performance tests, nutrition and wellness advice, as well as personal trainers and use of the Aspen Club’s fitness facility.
“There is knowledge and experience and a variety of facility and staff here,” says Bill Fabrocini, the director of Sports Performance at ACSMI. “We have seen everything; every kind of athlete, kids, stroke patients, spinal cord injuries…everything.” Fabrocini and colleague Christopher Peshek are two of the three certified orthopedic specialists in physical therapy in the Western slope. Fabrocini has treated Olympic athletes such as Casey Puckett, Gretchen Bleiler and David Robinson but attracts a wide variety of patients. Peshek specializes in orthopedics, sports and manual therapy and says he enjoys the community involvement aspect of the clinic. (Peshek is one of the coaches of the Aspen High School football team.)
Robin Severy- Pfautz and Dan Ritschard complete the physical therapy team at ACSMI. Severy-Pfautz, the athletic Aspen native, brings the female touch to patients at the clinic while Ritschard’s Spanish fluency brings him close to the vast Spanish-speaking community in the valley.
Experience aside, the facility at the Aspen Club is what makes ACSMI unique. Patients have access to all of the amenities of the health club, including the 20-yard pool, weight floor, cardio deck, and locker rooms. They can be paired with personal trainers and wellness coaches or visit the Cancer Survivor Center or the Susan G. Komen office. Walk downstairs from ACSMI and patients can have a therapeutic massage in the largest spa in Colorado. If that wasn’t enough, ACSMI recently brought chiropractor Dr. D’Arcy Brown on board.
Dr. Brown specializes in jaw work, pediatrics and pregnancy and says that being properly aligned is only one aspect of a healthy person. Dr. Brown focuses his treatment on an advanced nutrition program and “Aspen Life” which is a physical, chemical and emotional wellness program that changes habits for the whole body.
Whatever patients are “shopping” for in terms of physical therapy, chiropractic or general health, they are sure to find it at ACSMI. And they can expect to be in a better state of mind with an active role in their overall health goals when walking out the door.

What’s the best diet to lower triglycerides? And why is lowering triglycerides so important in the first place? The answers may surprise you.
For years high cholesterol has gotten most of the press, but recently researchers discovered that high triglyceride levels may be the most significant indicator of both stroke and heart disease – no matter what your total cholesterol count is.
High Triglycerides Research
Here are three good reasons why a diet to lower triglycerides is so important:
- First of all, a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found, if your triglycerides are high, you have two or three times the risk of heart disease and stroke – even if you have low cholesterol. [Vol. 86: 943-49]
- Secondly, drugs for lowering triglycerides have serious side effects. That’s why the American Heart Association recommends medications should only be considered after every other natural avenue for lowering triglycerides has been exhausted.
- And number three, a good diet to lower triglycerides has been shown to cut your risk of stroke and sudden cardiac death by nearly half.
Triglyceride levels over 200 mg/dl are considered high and put you at serious risk. Over 500 mg/dl would be extremely high. Even 150 to 199 mg/dl are thought to be borderline-high. To totally minimize your risk, aim for a count below 150 mg/dl.
The Best Diet for Lowering Triglycerides
Since triglycerides are forms of fats, you might think that less fat in the diet would be the most important step. However, it’s not. The main culprit is sugar!
That’s right, high glycemic carbohydrates are the most significant dietary predictors of high triglycerides and the most important foods to avoid. Sugar’s the reason even a little alcohol has been shown to create large increases in blood plasma triglycerides.
Begin with a good heart healthy food plan:
- Eat more lean protein and fresh vegetables.
- Switch from high glycemic carbohydrates to a high fiber low glycemic diet.
- Replace saturated and trans-fats with good fats.
- Lower total fats to 30% of calories.
- Reduce daily calorie intake to maintain optimum weight.
- Add 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day.
- And, if you smoke or drink, quit.
The Triglyceride Fish Factor
The best heart healthy food you can add to your diet is oily cold water fish, at least three times a week. This one change in your diet can reduce your triglycerides significantly.
According to research and the American Heart Association (AHA), the DHA and EPA fatty acids found in salmon and other fatty fish, not only decrease triglycerides, but these good fats can also cut your risk of stroke and sudden cardiac death by more than 44%.
What’s more, omega 3 fish oil has been shown to reduce irregular heartbeat, blood clotting, hardening of the arteries, overall cholesterol and blood pressure.
The AHA and others recommend everyone with heart concerns or issues take daily fish oil supplements with balanced DHA and EPA, no matter how much fish they eat.
Other Fish Oil Health Benefits
And a healthier heart isn’t the only benefit. Fish oil can also help prevent and relieve arthritis, cancer, diabetes, emphysema, ADHD and depression – just to name a few.

Even in a well-educated community like the Roaring Fork Valley, myths regarding nutrition still run rampant. In an era of anti-aging and instant gratification, many companies try to take advantage of this and solicit products and information that are of little or no value. While there certainly are some reputable nutrition sources out there, it is difficult to decipher the valuable information from the rest. There are five myths that the majority of the general public refuses to accept as faulty information.
The two most common nutrition myths pertain to macro-nutrients. Macro-nutrients are carbohydrates, protein and fat. Carbs and fat are the two that drum up the most controversy. In the 1990s, the U.S. market was flooded with low-fat everything. Consequently, people ate entirely too many simple carbohydrates, believing that as long as there wasn’t a lot of fat, they were eating healthily. This is not true because simple carbohydrates, although not high in fat, are still stored as fat when glycogen stores are saturated. Fat is still shunned by the average American who is on a “diet.” The truth is, there are healthy fats such as omega 3 and omega 5 fatty acids that should be staples in any well-balanced diet.
After the low-fat diet craze failed miserably, the low-carb, or Atkins, diet emerged. Somehow the general public was manipulated into believing that a high protein and high fat diet was the way to go. It is a myth that low-carb diets are superior. They are not a valid choice for several reasons. First, high levels of saturated fat promote heart disease and colon cancer. Second, high levels of protein can put undo strain on the liver and kidneys. Third, carbohydrates are essential for optimal energy levels and bodily functions (fruits and vegetables are primarily made of carbs).
Another nutrition myth that never seems to go away is the notion that following a fad diet is a healthy way to lose weight and maintain that weight loss. This is not true because fad diets often promote rapid weight loss and extreme calorie restriction. It is only safe to lose weight at a rate of no more than two pounds per week. Any fad diet advertising more than that is unsafe. Extreme calorie restriction doesn’t work because no matter what the breakdown, the diet will be insufficient in certain areas, thus leaving the person deficient in some essential nutrients. Not only that, but research suggests that people who restrict themselves calorically are more likely to stray from their diet and overeat. This refers to the term “yo-yo” dieting, which means crash dieting to lose weight and putting it all back on after bouts of overeating.
With the epidemic of Type II diabetes in America, another common myth is that sugar causes the disease. Eating sugar alone will not cause Type II diabetes. Consuming too many calories that include an abundance of simple sugars and leading a sedentary lifestyle both will contribute to contracting the disease.
The last common myth is ubiquitous in this valley. Natural or herbal supplements are widely believed to be healthy. This is a myth. In reality, many of them are not necessarily safe or effective. Supplements are not FDA regulated, so there is no guarantee you are taking exactly what the label says. Furthermore, many herbal remedies contain ephedra or a similar substance. Ephedra has been known to contribute to arrhythmia that can even lead to death. The fact that something is natural or herbal does not make it a good choice for consumption.
Exercise and a well-balanced diet are the only tried and true methods of fat loss and disease prevention.
