fitness-center.jpgAlthough most of us will be less than thrilled to say goodbye to the long summer days where the sun is always shining and the warm air heats our skin, it will soon be time to put away our hiking shoes and concentrate on the upcoming winter season. With the slopes opening in just over 100 days (wooohooo!), now is the perfect time to get in shape for those treacherous Highland’s bowl hikes and unbelievable powder days.

With the conceptual approval of our Aspen Living Project, changes at the club are in the near future. The Aspen Club is proposing to establish a healthy living community that will be an internationally renowned model for sustainable, healthy living development. With this, the club will be revamped and redone, allowing it to remain the valley’s premiere health club and spa. As we head into the future, we will begin to limit our membership so that can continue to live up to the reputation our members have come to expect. Now is the time to join our community and get a membership!

As a member of The Aspen Club & Spa, you will get your muscles moving in a setting that will make you want to work hard for your health. Member privileges include discounts on personal training, spa and salon services, boutique purchases, tennis and private Pilates. We have a full cardio deck with cardio theater, a massive weight area, a heated lap pool and over 50 fitness classes a week!

We have a membership for anyone’s needs. Please see Erin or Robert in membership to get in on this amazing opportunity!

Been back home now for 16 days and am starting to feel settled back into my house however, I’m NOT back into my pants! I’m out of shape and none of my clothes fit. What I have noticed is my endurance is down, my NEW FOUND balance is all over the place, and my cardio isn’t at my “Aspen Level”. However, I’ve gained flexibility, strength and control in my stance, and lost most of the horrible spasms in my body. I also find myself willing to do things I use to find hard and tiring. I’m noticing that I simply have more energy. It keeps me guessing, wondering what will come with the fusion of my baby stem cells and my active Aspen lifestyle.(Once I get it back!!)

Congratulations to Jack and Bonnie Wilke

Aspen Club Members of the Month!

Jack and Bonnie have been members here few quite a while. They have been very active in the Aspen community and have been role models to all on what it truly means to live the Aspen Life! They have been committed to their own health and wellness by taking Pialtes and personal training sessions and their dedication to their fitness program is setting the precedent for healthy living.

Both Jake and Bonnie have had to address some injuries and/or health issues but this proves to be no set back to achieving their health and fitness goals. Catherine Cussaguet, their Pilates Reformer instructor praises their consistency, labeling it as remarkable! What she finds inspirational is that do not limit their workouts to trainer only sessions, they also include cardiovascular workouts into their daily routine. Besides training at the Club the Wilke’s enjoy the beautiful outdoors, whether it is walking their dog every day, Bonnie enjoying the numerous Nordic ski trails her in Aspen or Jack taking a few runs down the mountain they are incorporating health and fitness in their everyday life.

Dawn Shepard, their personal trainer, agrees, that the Wilkes are truly inspirational. “They live a very active- Aspen lifestyle. I really appreciate their sense of humor, their tenacity when dealing with injury and how much they really care about each other. Having loving relationships in your life is key to being happy and healthy.” We are excited and proud to have the Wilkes as part of our Aspen Club Family. We wish them continued success; we are honored to be part of their journey.

Aspen Physical Therapy

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Deep in the heart of the 77,000 square foot facility known as The Aspen Club & Spa, there is a rehabilitation center unlike any other. If you are looking for a hospital setting, you won’t find it here. Patients can expect unique one on one hands-on attention from a team that has “seen it all” and will help return the patient stronger and more educated about their overall health and well-being than they were before. At The Aspen Club Sports Medicine Institute and Brown Chiropractic, a patient will experience a place that provides “one-stop shopping” for health needs in a serene and majestic arena.

The clinic boasts four highly trained physical therapists, a chiropractor and a variety of therapy aides and personal trainers that work as a team to bring the valley’s athletic community the extensive knowledge and physical therapy they need after an injury. In the 11-room facility, patients won’t stop at rehabilitation but instead progress with tools such as physiology, stress and aerobic performance tests, nutrition and wellness advice, as well as personal trainers and use of the Aspen Club’s fitness facility.

“There is knowledge and experience and a variety of facility and staff here,” says Bill Fabrocini, the director of Sports Performance at ACSMI. “We have seen everything; every kind of athlete, kids, stroke patients, spinal cord injuries…everything.” Fabrocini and colleague Christopher Peshek are two of the three certified orthopedic specialists in physical therapy in the Western slope. Fabrocini has treated Olympic athletes such as Casey Puckett, Gretchen Bleiler and David Robinson but attracts a wide variety of patients. Peshek specializes in orthopedics, sports and manual therapy and says he enjoys the community involvement aspect of the clinic. (Peshek is one of the coaches of the Aspen High School football team.)

Robin Severy- Pfautz and Dan Ritschard complete the physical therapy team at ACSMI. Severy-Pfautz, the athletic Aspen native, brings the female touch to patients at the clinic while Ritschard’s Spanish fluency brings him close to the vast Spanish-speaking community in the valley.

Experience aside, the facility at the Aspen Club is what makes ACSMI unique. Patients have access to all of the amenities of the health club, including the 20-yard pool, weight floor, cardio deck, and locker rooms. They can be paired with personal trainers and wellness coaches or visit the Cancer Survivor Center or the Susan G. Komen office. Walk downstairs from ACSMI and patients can have a therapeutic massage in the largest spa in Colorado. If that wasn’t enough, ACSMI recently brought chiropractor Dr. D’Arcy Brown on board.

Dr. Brown specializes in jaw work, pediatrics and pregnancy and says that being properly aligned is only one aspect of a healthy person. Dr. Brown focuses his treatment on an advanced nutrition program and “Aspen Life” which is a physical, chemical and emotional wellness program that changes habits for the whole body.

Whatever patients are “shopping” for in terms of physical therapy, chiropractic or general health, they are sure to find it at ACSMI. And they can expect to be in a better state of mind with an active role in their overall health goals when walking out the door.

Seek Diversity in Exercise

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

I have wrote about this before, but I feel like it warrants some further attention as we head into the winter season. If you only do one or two different physical activities, you cannot possibly be as fit as you potentially could be. It is a given that an extremely large percentage of people in this valley will regularly ski or snowboard this winter. Terrific. If this is all you do and you wonder why you aren’t in better shape, you are kidding yourself. I am not bashing the benefits of skiing, I simply want to broaden the average person’s perspective regarding exercise and physical activity.

The truth is, there are very few sports/activities alone that can give someone a well-rounded, high level of fitness. In order for this occur the activity must combine, at some level, muscular strength/power, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibilty. Instead of searching for the perfect sport, it is much easier (and more fun) to engage in multiple activities. Forinstance, an extremely fit client of mine does the following: Hikes and cycles for cardio endurance, does yoga for flexibilty and core stength, plays tennis to stay agile, and does resistance training to build/maintain muscle mass and reduce injury risk.

If all you typically do is ski down the mountain a few times a week… it would be very beneficial this winter to mix in a skin up buttermilk or a cross crountry ride across indepence pass. Take a new class or learn to lift weights. Anything you can do to add variety to your fitness regime will definitely pay off.

Ouch, Ski Conditioning!

Monday, October 15th, 2007

skiconditioningclass.jpgI made it out to my 1st ski conditioning class today. It was awesome, full class, lots of energy, great music and the best instructors. But I am going to be hurting in the morning. sc-class-500.jpg

This was a full on hour and half of non stop moving and grooving. And Yes I mean grooving, we ended doing the mambo. It was pretty cool to see everyone shaking their hips after an hour of non stop cardio. Club Chelsea has nothing on us. mambo.jpg

After 17 years of teaching here at the club Amy Knight is on top of her game. And don’t think you’ll get away with slacking off either because she is watching every move you make. So come ready to sweat and work your butt off. But it’s all worth it in 39 days when you take your first run of the season. skiconditioning-poster1500w1.jpg

this-body-dirk-09-21-07.jpg

Dirk’s Profile.

I started really working out in college while on the track team as a pole
vaulter. I started seeing the changes in my body and it became a big part of my life
style. Not just for the physical aspect but also the mental as a stress
reliever and a way to ground myself.

I work out 5 days a week mixing in tradition strength training with
functional cross training. I love taking my interest in the outdoors and
getting out as much as possible. Hiking, climbing, telemark skiing and Mtn
biking. It feeds my mind body and spirit. I enjoy getting my clients out and
show them that a good full body workout doesn’t have to just take place
within the four walls of a gym.

I have a diet consist of fresh fruit, vegetable, wheat grass, I love my
wheat grass. I eat a lot of chicken and fish and the occasional burger.
Peanut M&M’s are my down fall. I believe in the philosophy of a life of
moderation not deprivation. Just don’t over do it.

Finding what you really enjoy doing to work your body is half the
battle. Get and stay active. Being active along with a positive attitude is
the fountain of youth as many people in Aspen have discovered.

I became interested in total Wellness back in college and really started
to move more into a holistic approach to a person health and fitness when I
became a Wellness coach in 2004 which has taking my personal training to a
different level. Looking at a persons total wellness from stress management,
weight management, strength training, cardio, nutrition and other area of a
persons life they feel falls under their Wellness umbrella.

I enjoy helping clients develop a wellness vision for themselves and working with them to
reach that vision. The Aspen Club and Spa is a great facility for a person
to reach their best.

By Aspen Spin

When the calender strikes October, one thing comes to the forefront at Aspen Spin.  That one thing —– SKI CONDITIONING.   Our entire staff is hitting it hard at the super-posh Aspen Club and Spa.  Since the weather is still awesome we’re continuing to hike and bike like bi-atchs.    But, as of today it’s www.AspenClub.com  each and every day.

With the help of a wellness counselor at The Aspen Club we designed a daily fitness and nutrition routine that should allow all of us at Aspen Spin to have a healthier, more productive ski season.   So here it is.  Cardio–45 minutes.  Core and strength exercises using the bosu ball, medicine ball and fitness ball and some light weights.  What can we say–we like to ball.  We’re concentrating on balance and core specific exercises for skiing —some of the same ones that Bode Miller does.  The whole thing is followed by some serious stretching.

The most important part of our regime is our training table.  The new in-house restaurant at The Aspen Club is called GARNISH—and it’s da bomb!!!  We met with executive chef Clark Church (see pic) and he is cookin’ up healthy and nutritious food that actually tastes great and is fully satisfying.  Img_0337 While the grub at GARNISH is not quite as comforting as a whole deep dish pizza (our normal repast), it’s balanced, beneficial and totally scrumptious.  Clark, who won the SOUPSKOL competition at WinterSkol last winter has us eating egg white frittata’s with shrooms, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes every morning after our intense workout. MMMMM mmmm good.
