Moab Skinny Tire Festival

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

The organizers of the Moab Skinny Tire Festival asked me to pass this on.  It’s a great event, which I’ve attended a number of times, and a good opportunity to get in some fun, early season training.  Money raised goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Moab Cancer Treatment & Resource Center.  I may or may not be able to attend, but I strongly encourage you to.  Please contact Beth if you have questions.

We have the Moab Skinny Tire Festival next week.  We still have room and the temperatures may be decent :) .

As usual the winter is just flying by.  Can you believe the snow that we’ve had?  At this rate we won’t be able to mountain bike until August.  Oh well, the skiing has been amazing – I hope you’ve been getting up there.

Please contact me if you’re interested in buying your own PowerTap.  Used properly, a power meter is the most effective training tool available to cyclists.  All the pros use them, and they’re not just for indoor use, they are designed to be used out on the road.

Indoor Cycling Newsletter

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Happy Holidays.

Session 1 of this winter’s indoor class series ends this week.  Thank you to all those who participated in what I think you will agree was a very successful first session, with record attendance for this early in the season.  We’ll find out on Thursday how much we’ve progressed but hopefully you can all feel a substantial improvement in fitness already, before we actually measure it (that’s just the fun part J).  We’ve done some great workouts so far and you should feel good going into the Christmas – New Year period with almost two months worth of consistent training under your belt.  Well done.

Schedule Update

  • Session 1 ends this Thursday, December 20th and then we take the week of Christmas off.
  • Session 2 runs from Monday December 31st to February 21stSee below for schedule changes during the first week of this session.
  • Session 3 runs from Monday March 3rd to April 24th.
  • For Session 2 we will be adding a Monday / Wednesday, 5:30 PM option to the already existing Tuesday / Thursday options.  See attachment for full schedule.
  • For those currently registered, please inform / remind me if you wish to change to a different class.  Right now there is availability in all classes – please let me know soon before the classes fill up with new participants.  Otherwise I will assume that you are happy where you are.

Schedule change for the week of the New Year:

As New Year’s Day falls on the first Tuesday of Session 2, we have rearranged the schedule for that week only:

  • The Monday / Wednesday evening classes will be held on Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 PM.  Thus there will no Monday class for this first week.
  • The Tuesday / Thursday morning and noon classes will be switched to Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 AM and 12:00 noon.  The Tuesday / Thursday evening classes will remain on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 PM.
  • Thus on New Year’s Day there will be no morning or lunchtime classes, but there will be the regular evening class.

Please contact me if any of this is unclear, or if you wish to switch your schedule for that week.

Register now for Sessions 2 and 3.

If you haven’t already registered for sessions 2 and 3, please contact me ASAP.  Yes it is possible to participate in Session 3 only, but we do anticipate that some classes will fill up and preference is given to those already participating in Session 2.  If you wait until March to begin you may miss out on a spot in your preferred class.  Guarantee yourself a spot in Session 3, at the time of your choice, by signing up now for both sessions.  It’s not just a sales pitch, you really will be in much better shape come the spring if you do both sessions rather than just the final one, and you’ll save 10% by registering for both.  Begin your training before that New Year’s hangover has fully worn off and you’ll be well on your way to the best summer of cycling you’ve ever had.

Please see attachment for pricing details.

Place your order now for PowerTaps, indoor trainers etc.

I will be placing an order later this week, so please contact me if you’re interested in purchasing any of the following items:

PowerTaps.  A number of you have expressed interest in purchasing your own PowerTap.  I thoroughly recommend using a PowerTap for all of your rides, indoors and outdoors, if you are interested in maximizing efficiency and getting the most out of your training.  Since I started using a PowerTap some five years ago, I rarely ride without one, and my performance has improved considerably.  It is well established that training with a power meter, in conjunction with the guidance of a knowledgeable coach, is essential if you really want to reach your potential as a cyclist, no matter what level you aspire to. (Please talk to me if you are interested in individual coaching.)

Prices:  PowerTap SL $1299.99 ; PowerTap SL 2.4 Wireless $1599.99

CycleOps Fluid² Indoor Trainers.  These are the trainers that we use in class.  If you wish to ride more often than your two classes per week it is a good idea to have one of these at home.  They also make great gifts for your cycling friends that are unable to attend our classes.

Price: $329.99

PowerTap 300PT Indoor Cycle.  This is another option for riding more than just your two classes per week, especially if you don’t have a second bike and don’t want to transport your bike to and from class each day.  The 300 PT is a high quality indoor bike (similar to a “spinning bike” ) with a PowerTap built into it.  You’ll get all the information that you get in our classes (power, heart rate, cadence and more) on a fully adjustable indoor cycle that can be set up to replicate the exact position of your road bike.  It can be easily adjusted to fit any size of rider and would be a great addition to a home gym.  The handlebar-mounted computer is fully downloadable, just like a PowerTap, so your workouts can be analyzed by yourself or your coach.   For those who can’t always make it to class, this is a great option for making up classes in your own time.  I can email the workout to you and you can do it at home.

Price: $1899.99

For more information on these products go to the CycleOps website   www.cycleops.com   Contact me to order, or if you have questions.

Enjoy the Holidays.

No Excuses

Monday, November 5th, 2007

If you live the Roaring Fork Valley, are healthy, and don’t work 100 hours a week; there is no excuse not to be fit. You have access to year-round outdoor trails for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snow shoing. Not to mention, world class downhill skiing and snowboarding. Throw in 300 plus days of sunshine and the fact that “everyone is doing it” and there really is no viable reason why we shouldn’t be fit. Other than Domino’s and McDonald’s there really isn’t much crap around here to eat.

Since I am a trainer, you may be thinking, “why is this guy writing this? Doesn’t he want out of shape people for potential clients?” Of course I enjoy helping people no matter what the case is. However, the truth is, there will always be people seeking out a trainer to take it to the next level for a variety of reasons: training for an event, look stunning for their wedding, lack motivation/knowledge to reach a goal, etc.

I put my heart and soul into my profession and will help anyone who seeks me out. But my dream is for Aspen and specifically The Aspen Club and Spa to become renown as a place where fit people come to be the best. Don’t get me wrong, we are already far ahead of the game here. This is not meant to be a rant. I just feel like sometimes we may take this place for granted. Having come from Milwaukee, Wi where you are surrounded by the picture of unhealthiness, it is easy for me to appreciate the Aspen lifestyle. If you can’t get into reasonable shape here, it is a pretty safe bet that the environment isn’t the problem.

“PowerTap” Indoor Cycling Series.

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Announcing the fifth winter of the Aspen Club’s

“PowerTap” Indoor Cycling Series.

This is the condensed version, for those of you who are familiar with how the series works. For those who are not, further details are attached.

As usual the series will be split up into three sessions of eight weeks duration, with one week off between sessions. The series is designed to be a comprehensive training program to prepare you for the cycling season, so to fully benefit we recommend that you sign up the full series. By registering for all three sessions in advance not only will you save money but you will ensure yourself a spot in the class of your choice for the whole winter. If you do not wish to begin in November it is possible to join in at any time, but remember that space in each class is limited and we do anticipate that some classes will sell out.

Dates
Session 1: November 5th to December 20th

Session 2: December 31st to February 21st

Session 3: March 3rd to April 24th

Class times (choose one option as your regular time).

Monday and Wednesday, 5:30 pm

Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30 am

Tuesday and Thursday, 12 noon

Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 pm

Price

Aspen Club Members:

- $575 per 8 week session (two classes per week – includes class fees and equipment costs)

- $1495 for all 3 sessions

Non-members:

- $625 per 8 week session (two classes per week – includes class fees and equipment costs)

- $775 per 8 week session (includes two classes per week and full use of the Club for the 8 week duration of the session, 7 days a week)

- $1675 for all 3 sessions

Would you like to purchase your own PowerTap? If you’re serious about your training then you should be riding with one year round, indoors and outdoors, just like the pros do.

For those who sign up for one session or more we are offering 20% off the price of a new PowerTap SL (MSRP = $1299; your price = $1039).

Rather than use our PowerTap wheels during the classes, this will stay on your bike and be used exclusively by you. On your outdoor rides you’ll benefit from owning the most effective training tool available to cyclists.

Please contact me to register or if you have questions. Please pass this email onto friends that may be interested.

I look forward to riding with you this winter.

It’s Fabulous to be 40!

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I turned 40 on Saturday, 3/4 of the way through the Golden Leaf half marathon (I was born at noon). The leaves were blowing and bright yellow, the sun was blazing through the fall breeze; my boyfriend and 2 best friends were running with me and I was overwhelmed by gratitude!! In fact, about 8 miles into the trail – when I realized I was actually going to finish, I thought I would cry from the overwhelming gratitude of being among my best friends, healthy and blessed in every way. There are times when you realize you have everything you need and none of it is outside of yourself – today was one of those days for me.

I reached and exceeded my goals for competing in 2 triathlons. I completed 5 events! I completed 2 sprints, a 5 mile run, a 5K run, the ride for the pass and a 1/2 marathon. This was truly the first time I have ever really trained for anything.

I reached and exceeded my goal for staying healthy and uninjured! I am incredibly sore from the run, but hey – sore muscles are expected!

I got 75% to my weight loss goal of 20lbs, with a 12 pound weight loss and a loss of approximately 5% body fat and considerable inches. I found that training and weight loss on the scale aren’t always compatible. I am happy that I’ve lost more than a clothing size and have learned more about lifestyle vs. diet. I intend to continue this process as a journey and not necessarily a destination. Thank you to Dirk Shultz, my amazing wellness coach, for helping me to see myself as someone who makes good choices day to day, vs. for the time it takes to lose a certain # of pounds. Am I disappointed I won’t be going to Maui lighter, yes! Am I committed to making good choices in my lifestyle, even more so!

If you’re goal is to improve your life, wellness is by far the best entry point I can think of. Contact me anytime (970-948-5791) or call the club to schedule your coaching with Dirk Shultz! If you’re local, sign up for interval cycling with Mark Alderdice and fitness coaching with Angela Rooding!

My biggest learning from this process? Fabulous is knowing you have everything you need inside you and sharing that with others; the rest is gravy (lowfat gravy of course, HA!)

Triathlon #2 completed – Fearless and Unstoppable is a team effort

Monday, August 27th, 2007

High Country Triathlon
2:44
Approximate times for each event
Swim – 18
Ride – 1:25
Run – 50
Transitions – about 5 minutes each

Aspen Life. The name says it all! Healthy lifestyles are a priority here like no other place on earth (except maybe Maui). The participants of the high country triathlon here in Aspen are a representation of the most healthy, happy & fit people around. Everywhere I looked I saw confident smiles, determination and the most positive general outlook on life you could find anywhere. People being friendly and helping each other be their best. I believe this is a direct correlation or reflection of how people feel about themselves here.

I showed up with a flat tire on my bike. Knowing I could change a bike tire wasn’t comforting with less than 30 minutes and nerves that made my hands less than nimble. No sooner did I realize I was in real trouble than a guy from Nova Scotia tried to help; and even though he couldn’t do much – the fact that he was there inspired me to figure it out. I looked up and there was Mark Alderdice, the Aspen Club cycling coach and master instructor ready to save the day! After he teased me (thank you), he urged me to get ready for the race and he’d take care of the bike. WOW! I couldn’t believe my relief & good fortune.

I Arrived at the pool to find my tri-posse waiting and cheering for me. I had resigned myself to being on my own that day and was touched and honored to be greeted by my ‘mountain girl power team’.

I made instant buddies with the girls in my swim heat, which made the fact that I had that panic – heart racing, – gasping for breath meltdown again a little more bearable. My nerves are really an issue that I am being called to attend to. Jumped out of the pool (last) and immediately recovered to make my ride up the Bells a tribute to my home and a prep for the run I dreaded. I even got to motivate a fellow racer who was struggling at the top of the ride. Going into the run I was amazed and relieved that I felt strong and light. Surprised that we weren’t going to have to run the high school track before finishing allowed me to sprint to the finish. I felt like I could have run forever!

I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face as I saw my posse and my friend and wellness coach Dirk Shultz there with his camera, stylish look and a hug for my sweaty body. His presence was the finishing touch to an amazing goal I never imagined for myself.

Later, I couldn’t resist helping a fellow racer by brining her to the local bike shop to fix her broken chain and help her negotiate Independence Pass for her drive home to Denver (and another triathlon the next morning!). She said to me “You know how you described what that guy Mark did for you? I feel like you’re doing that same thing for me!”

Being Fearless and Unstoppable is truly a team effort. Thank you to the Aspen Club and Spa for inspiring and supporting me to be Fabulous at 40.

I’ve always competed in sports where everything leads up to the competition; competing being the thing that really matters. In gymnastics you were fairly non-existent in practice; locked in a dark gym while the rest of the world exists in the sun; or at least it feels that way. It was the ‘meets’ where the gymnast shined; in the cute leotard with the spunky routine and unique self-expression. In tennis, for me, the matches were always the true test of ability. Practice was fun with little pressure; training was unfocused and random. Your competitive drive won you matches that you shouldn’t win and your mental madness lost you matches you should have won.

For me, my first triathlon was upside down in the respect that the training was the most fun, inspiring and empowering and the actual competition was anti-climactic. I’m not saying the event wasn’t amazing, there were over 3000 women competing and the energy was frenetic. I learned invaluable lessons for my next event and the camaraderie with my friends was a blast.

But what I felt from the time I arrived to the time I finished was a sense of power at what I created in my mind, body and spirit way before I ever arrived! Your ‘competitive drive’ doesn’t help you in triathlon if you didn’t train properly (unlike tennis) and your mental toughness can’t make you run much faster than you’ve prepared your body to run. In triathlon, you get what you train for, plain and simple.

Here’s proof…
My times in all events were exactly what I trained at – no matter what the circumstances on competition day!

The swim:

In training I was strong in the swim. So, being cocky in this area, I started at the front of the pack. I noticed my heart rate was very high with nerves, but I blew that off since as a public speaker, I feel like that all the time before I speak and I ‘knew’ from experience it would dissipate as soon as I ‘got on the stage’. No sooner did I jump in the water than my goggles were kicked off and when I reached back to get them, I got punched in the face by an oncoming swim stroke. I was then hyperventilating and thought I was going to drown. I had visions of having to tell my sister (the ex-pro surfer) that I couldn’t even pull of the swim! So, I ended up back-stroking the entire swim just to get enough oxygen not to drown. Even with all that drama, I still finished in 18 minutes; around the exact time it took me in training!

The Bike:
All I ever do is uphill rides and interval training at the Aspen Club (amazing) so I was thrilled to find the ride unbelievably easy and I finished in the top 400 out of over 3000 people. I was passing people left and right. I attribute this to the interval training class at the Aspen Club, NO doubt in my mind!! Thank you Mark Alderdice.

The Run:
What can I say, the pain of running is overwhelming for me. This is where I need the most work and the biggest attitude adjustment. Help Dirk Shultz, my wellness coach! My plan is to dramatically improve on the run for the high country tri in Aspen in 2 weeks!

Late August until September 22 will be about the remainder of my weight loss; just in case you think I forgot about that part of my goal. I haven’t and won’t feel complete until both goals are accomplished.

Stay tuned….
