Super Sprint Distance

  • 400 Yard Swim – 20 lengths of 20 yard pool (5 to 15min)
  • 6 Mile Bike – on a trainer (15 to 40min)
  • 2 Mile Run – on a treadmill (10 to 25min)

 

Groups of 3 participants race at the same time

 

$70 for all racers except those enrolled in the spring classes, limit to 50 participants

 

Athletes must schedule time for the event during the week of May 5 to May 9, Times TBD

 

No timed transitions, everyone gets 10 min recovery between the swim and the bike (enough time to towel off and walk safely to the bike and put on shoes), and 5 min recovery between the bike and the run (enough time to change shoes if needed and walk safely to the treadmill). The athlete can start whenever they are ready, but the clock for the next event starts after the allotted recovery time or when the athlete starts exercising, whichever is first. If the athlete takes more time than the recovery allowed, the clock for the next event starts whether they are exercising or not and is included in the total time.

 

Awards:

Aspen Club membership, massage, personal training- ect.

Results will be posted.

 

Aspen Club employees are encouraged to participate, but in exchange they must volunteer on one of the scheduled days. They can oversee the swim, bike, or run to make sure the athletes go the correct distance and record the time.

ASPEN CLUB RAISES $100,000 FOR STEM CELL PIONEERS

ASPEN, COLORADO—This past Tuesday, the Aspen Club & Spa (ACS) staged a wildly successful 30th Anniversary and Benefit Party to send three traumatic spinal injury survivors—Amanda Boxtel, Leah Roland, and Kasie Burtard—to India for stem cell therapy.

The event saw 600+ participants raise over $100,000, with donations continuing to come in. In one particularly exciting auction, an adorable Labrador puppy went for $13,000.

Aspen Club chief executive officer Michael Fox described the Pursuing Possibilities fundraising event as “more than helping a few deserving people in our community achieve a better life—it’s about creating a better future for all of us, starting with these three early pioneers.”

The lively event at The Aspen Club & Spa on Tuesday night included a poker tournament, a live auction, a silent auction, and live music.  Aspen Club marketing manager Casey McConnell called the turnout “amazing” and the event ‘the party of the year.”

Amanda recently returned from India having undergone human embryonic stem cell treatment.  After almost 16 years of paralysis, her body is coming alive and hope is now a part of her vocabulary!

 

Amanda will return for ongoing treatment in January.  Leah and Kasie will follow in Amandas footsteps by traveling to India for stem cell treatments in the spring of 2008.

Happy Holidays.

Session 1 of this winter’s indoor class series ends this week.  Thank you to all those who participated in what I think you will agree was a very successful first session, with record attendance for this early in the season.  We’ll find out on Thursday how much we’ve progressed but hopefully you can all feel a substantial improvement in fitness already, before we actually measure it (that’s just the fun part J).  We’ve done some great workouts so far and you should feel good going into the Christmas – New Year period with almost two months worth of consistent training under your belt.  Well done.

Schedule change for the week of the New Year:

As New Year’s Day falls on the first Tuesday of Session 2, we have rearranged the schedule for that week only:

  • The Monday / Wednesday evening classes will be held on Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 PM.  Thus there will no Monday class for this first week.
  • The Tuesday / Thursday morning and noon classes will be switched to Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 AM and 12:00 noon.  The Tuesday / Thursday evening classes will remain on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 PM.
  • Thus on New Year’s Day there will be no morning or lunchtime classes, but there will be the regular evening class.

 Please contact me if any of this is unclear, or if you wish to switch your schedule for that week.

A recent resident of Aspen, has over 20 years of Human Resource leadership experience with Fortune 100 companies. Both domestically and internationally, this experience is in a variety of industries ranging from financial services, healthcare, manufacturing to technology and customer service outsourcing. Gint has worked in all areas of HR, including Staffing, Organizational/Leadership Development, Labor Relations, Compensation, Benefits, and Training. Outside of HR, Gint had roles in Mergers & Acquisitions and Business Process Outsourcing. He earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Loyola University of Chicago. Gint is a founding principal of a local consulting concern specializing in helping small-medium sized businesses attract and retain top performing talent.

Bennett A. Bramson, MPA
Has become widely recognized as a sought after trainer, motivational speaker, fundraising executive, and management expert for myriad organizations and businesses throughout the United States. He is president of his own consulting firm, DevelopMentors, Inc., whose clients have included several major cruise lines, the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Education, and Labor, the National Restaurant Association, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as many RFV non-profits. He served as Executive Director of Aspen Youth Experience, Deputy Director of the Aspen Art Museum, and Executive Director of the Touro Infirmary Foundation of New Orleans. In 2006, he was honored by the Aspen Rotary Club with the Tom Sardy Award, for distinguished community service, and was recently honored by Florida International University’s Alumni Association with the 2007 Torch Award for Community Leadership.

Rebecca Doane
Since 2000 Rebecca has served as the City of Aspen’s Director of Human Resources. In addition to having more than 25 years of professional HR experience she holds a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Psychology and a MBA. Through her HR consulting company, Working Solutions, LLC, Ms. Doane has helped many local organizations overcome the challenge of recruiting, selecting and retaining successful employees as well as comply with all Federal, State, and local employment regulations. As a former Civil Rights Specialist for the State of Colorado she is an expert on unlawful discrimination and has successfully defended many organizations from complaints. She has served as an expert witness regarding sexual harassment in Federal District Court. Ms. Doane continues her consultancy, Working Solutions, LLC on a limited basis today.

Casey McConnell
Casey is currently the marketing director at the Aspen Club and Spa. He has been learning the ins and outs of online marketing for the past 4 years. From youtube videos to search engine optimization he has been online since his high school years back in the late 90’s.

A wellness coach and life coach, certified massage therapist, personal trainer, Dirk combines all facets of wellness to support clients in being the healthiest and happiest they can possibly be.

LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET IS DETRIMENTAL

Participating in a high energy, classes  such as  SKI CONDITIONING, BODY ATTACK, or any endurance training program , on a LOW CARBOHYDRATE  DIET  is detrimental to improvements in endurance .

A low-carbohydrate intake can have a really disastrous effect on workout quality,

It is well established that carbohydrate is the primary source used above 65% VO2 max, which equates to approx 70-75% HR max, which is the level of intensity you would expect most clients/participants  to be working at , if not higher , in these type of classes.

If a person is following a low-carbohydrate diet and therefore their liver and muscle glycogen stores are low, they will find it very difficult to work at a reasonable intensity during the session and will burn less calories and see less improvement in their fitness levels.

Research shows that low- carbohydrate , may lead to poor movement quality, fatigue, hence increased risk of injury.

It is also important to remember the brain and the central nervous system also rely on carbohydrate fuel,  the brain uses 4-6g glucose every hour and so when blood glucose levels are low, this can cause bad effects on skill , coordination and movement during execution.

So if you are going to join in in a Ski Conditioning class ,or a high energy class, eat some carbohydrate with each meal , and if you are trying to loose some weight, then smaller portions. Exercise drinks are a good option, to maintain energy, and keep your -self  well hydrated.

Or you might find your performance in your Ski Conditioning class/BodyAttack, Tiring ,and unsatisfactionary and wonder why you are on the wrong leg , or going in the  wrong direction !!!

It’s round two for Aspen Club redevelopment

The owner of the Aspen Club plans to submit in the next two weeks a development application that includes building 19 fractional townhomes and transforming the club into a destination holistic health facility.

The proposal is similar to the one that Michael Fox submitted and subsequently withdrew in 2006 because of a lack of support from the Aspen City Council and the club’s neighbors.

Fox said he has tweaked the proposal in many ways, with a focus on environmental sustainability and input from the club’s neighbors.

Called “Aspen Club Living,” the plan has been accepted into a new pilot program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) is a third-party reviewed rating system that integrates the principles of smart growth, new urbanism and green building into the first national standard for neighborhood design.

“We will be the first place in the country where sustainable development merges with holistic health and Aspen is the best place to do it,” Fox said.

One significant change from the old proposal is the elimination of a parking garage underneath the club. Instead, several auto disincentives will be employed, including paid parking at the club’s 95-space lot.

When the proposal was going through the review process two years ago, neighbors came out in full force against the project. They formed an opposition group, hired an attorney and distributed thousands of glossy fliers campaigning against the project.

They argued the city had no justification for approving an overlay to the club’s underlying residential zoning and said it would create more traffic on Ute Avenue.

Fox’s new plan claims to lessen traffic on Ute Avenue and Crystal Lake Road through eco shuttles, stricter employee commuting requirements, and car- and bike-share programs. Fox plans to buy electric or air-powered vehicles for use by guests and employees coming into town.

For the past year, Fox said he has been talking with residents who live near the club, hearing their concerns and creating a development they can live with. In his first attempt, Fox didn’t do that.

“I did a lousy job listening to the neighbors,” he said. “The town wasn’t ready for it and we hadn’t thought it through.”

The number of fractional units on site hasn’t changed, however. The proposal still calls for 13 townhome units where the club’s tennis courts are currently located, and six other timeshare lodge units above the existing club building. Fox estimates the units would go for between $150,000 and $400,000 for two-week blocks throughout the year.

The employee housing component would consist of 12 two-bedroom units – about 900 square feet each – located behind the club.

“I had an epiphany about six months ago and decided to take out the parking garage and replace it with affordable housing,” Fox said.

In total, the development footprint would be 40,000 square feet and would cost about $20 million to build. Another $7 million will go into remodeling the club, which would include new locker rooms, an outdoor pool and fitness areas, as well as new programs and activities. The project would be financed by investors and cash flow from the club’s operations, Fox said.

Fox’s financial plan predicts that the owners of the residences will help fund the club’s operations. Through homeowner fees and weekly participants in new health programs, the revenue will offset the basic costs of running the club, Fox said.

“We envision Aspen Club Living as a place where families will come annually for a healthy retreat,” Fox wrote in a letter to city officials. “These families will stay in the same units for the same weeks as 18 other families every year.”

When the units aren’t being used by owners they will be available for groups, families and single travelers who participate in special one- and two-week healthy lifestyle programs.

Those programs focus on a wide array of health issues: stress and weight management, diabetes, integrative medicine and aging, as well as retreats, workshops and seminars. Weeklong programs include yoga, Pilates, meditation, cancer survival, biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering and more.

“Health has changed a lot,” Fox said. “We want to integrate medical and alternative health and define health for the 21st century.”

Fox said the concept is designed around other world-class health and spa facilities like Canyon Ranch in Arizona and the Duke Center for Living in North Carolina.

The difference, however, is that Aspen Club Living would be an environmentally sustainable neighborhood, Fox said.

The LEED-ND program focuses on design and construction elements that bring buildings together and relate the neighborhood to its larger landscape through environmentally friendly construction and technology, alternative transportation and its linkage to trails.

The Aspen Club sits on 5 acres, and is able to utilize geothermal fields for heating and cooling the facility through ground source heat pumps and geothermal exchange. It also has an acre of rooftop space for solar panels that could generate a good portion of the club’s electric needs.

Fox also proposes to reduce energy consumption with more efficient insulation, green roofs, better HVAC systems, and using pools for thermal storage and heat exchange.

“We are dealing with two crisises today – health and the environment,” Fox said. “This project addresses health and sustainability, that’s the exciting part.”

Triathlon #2 completed – Fearless and Unstoppable is a team effort

Aspen Life. The name says it all! Healthy lifestyles are a priority here like no other place on earth (except maybe Maui). The participants of the high country triathlon here in Aspen are a representation of the most healthy, happy & fit people around. Everywhere I looked I saw confident smiles, determination and the most positive general outlook on life you could find anywhere. People being friendly and helping each other be their best. I believe this is a direct correlation or reflection of how people feel about themselves here.

I showed up with a flat tire on my bike. Knowing I could change a bike tire wasn’t comforting with less than 30 minutes and nerves that made my hands less than nimble. No sooner did I realize I was in real trouble than a guy from Nova Scotia tried to help; and even though he couldn’t do much – the fact that he was there inspired me to figure it out. I looked up and there was Mark Alderdice, the Aspen Club cycling coach and master instructor ready to save the day! After he teased me (thank you), he urged me to get ready for the race and he’d take care of the bike. WOW! I couldn’t believe my relief & good fortune.

I Arrived at the pool to find my tri-posse waiting and cheering for me. I had resigned myself to being on my own that day and was touched and honored to be greeted by my ‘mountain girl power team’.

I made instant buddies with the girls in my swim heat, which made the fact that I had that panic – heart racing, – gasping for breath meltdown again a little more bearable. My nerves are really an issue that I am being called to attend to. Jumped out of the pool (last) and immediately recovered to make my ride up the Bells a tribute to my home and a prep for the run I dreaded. I even got to motivate a fellow racer who was struggling at the top of the ride. Going into the run I was amazed and relieved that I felt strong and light. Surprised that we weren’t going to have to run the high school track before finishing allowed me to sprint to the finish. I felt like I could have run forever!

I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face as I saw my posse and my friend and wellness coach Dirk Shultz there with his camera, stylish look and a hug for my sweaty body. His presence was the finishing touch to an amazing goal I never imagined for myself.

Later, I couldn’t resist helping a fellow racer by brining her to the local bike shop to fix her broken chain and help her negotiate Independence Pass for her drive home to Denver (and another triathlon the next morning!). She said to me “You know how you described what that guy Mark did for you? I feel like you’re doing that same thing for me!”

Being Fearless and Unstoppable is truly a team effort. Thank you to the Aspen Club and Spa for inspiring and supporting me to be Fabulous at 40.
