(just a reminder Leah will be one of our special guests on Tuesday Aug 12th for Tuesday with Michael)
Dear Friends and Family,
Day 89 – Somewhere in the middle of July 15th.
The 3 month stay at NuTech Mediworld and my first human embryonic stem cell treatment has come to an end. As I type I am sitting on the plane, bound for Chicago, in anticipation of arriving back on American soil. What an intense, to say the least, experience I have been given. Out of my comfort zone and trying to defy all odds and obstacles that have been put in front of me in order to regain my body and enhance our knowledge of stem cell therapy. With love and gratitude I wonder how to express my sincerest thanks to all my supporters, especially my caretakers. Without Danno, Buffy, Sherry, and Maria the trip as the procedures would have never been possible. They gave freely of themselves, picking me up when my spirits were down, holding me tight when the pain was unbearable and reassuring me I WAS strong enough to continue on…..
Stepping off the plane and into the fresh mountain air; Aspen was better than I could have possibly imagined with the sun shinning, a slight breeze and absolutely no humidity. It really is paradise, heaven on earth, even better… It’s my home. Elizabeth and Tom were at the airport to greet me, help with the luggage and escort me to my apartment. All smiles, lots of hugs and news of the latest happenings around town. Ed was waiting on the patio as we pulled into the apartment complex and the welcoming crew was complete. A BBQ with fresh kabob veggies, a bit of salmon, a slice of tuna, and some flank steak we ate and caught up, picking up right where we left off in April. This time there was just a lot less snow talk and plans to go full moon rafting/camping on the weekend. My girls Mayday and Daisy joined the party staying close to my side all evening. A nice homecoming as friends dropped by throughout the night. I fought to keep my eyes open. Can anyone say jet laggggged? I’ve never been so jet lagged. I’m unsure of the date, unsure of the time. I must sleep… I guess I will listen to my body and go with this crazy sleep schedule, until I can get back into a routine. I figure at some point I will wake up feeling good and normal again.
Improvements After 88 Days of Stem Cell Therapy
1.Posture is straighter/ more erect
2.Total body is stronger
3.Better balance
4.Rt. knee no longer snaps into hyperextension. Still goes into hyper but not as bad.
5.Rt. hand is soft
6.Able to extend RT fingers
7.Toes- I can differentiate movements between extension and flexion.
8.Toes are moving
9.Ankle rotation is slight but better
10.Ankle moves inward and outward slightly but better
11.Stronger in yoga poses
12.Lungs are stronger
13.RT hamstring stronger. Can move against gravity with weight.
14.Less spasms in overall body
15.Don’t take as much medicine/ bacelophen (1 bacelophen a day instead of 4).
16.Better proper gait with weight shifting
17.Hips are more even
There has been many changes in my life; some instantly unexpected, some just unexpected, some planned and then re-planned, no matter how the changes come about, I believe everything happens for a reason. I just hope I learn to read the signs, remain true to my self, relax, and as always enjoy the ride. Here’s to the future… Whatever it may be.
Thanks for the many emails of love, support and encouragement along the way. This journey is one to remember, an experience that has no end or boundaries. With mind, brain, body and soul; I take a deep breath as I dare to push on dreaming big.
Blog updates to continue, as the stem cells continue to grow and form in my body.
With Love and healing light,
Leah

It all started in Monte Carlo when I first heard of Aspen from a devastatingly handsome guy who stole my heart in a fraction of a heartbeat. Later I learned that for whatever strange reason, men and women are equally gorgeous wherever you look in this town, just like my ten-year-long romance with Aspen has been—as if Aspen and Monte Carlo had something in common. In the middle of expensive, elegant, sexy, classy partying, you make connections that last a lifetime. Is this because people are gorgeous and irresistible? Or, is this because of the personality they all seem to share? Elegance coupled with a laidback approach are both at work at the same time. There is something really special and inviting about such ambiance. Add that to Aspen’s own magical touch, that intriguingly inspiring charm you cannot find anyplace else, and you understand God’s mischievous creation for fun everlasting!
Just in case the late night partying wears you out, the Aspen Club & Spa, a one of a kind, state-of-the-art full service spa will put you right back on track. Located in a scenic mountain setting with a full size swimming pool, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi, steam rooms, sauna, juice bar, spa services, trainers, beauticians and even chiropractors, it has amenities to satisfy all worldly desires and give you a glimpse of the good life!

In Aspen, it always pays to be connected. We were recently invited to The Aspen Chamber Resort Association’s,(ACRA) quarterly networking event. Nobody can out network Aspen Spin, so we made the scene. Who knew that a business-to business mixer could be so much fun? Apparently, ACRA did. Click ACRA to see their website, it’s one of the most informative sites in Aspen.
The “apres work” event took place at the Isberian Rug Company. The spacious “magic carpet” store proved to be an awesome spot for a party. Super-tasty finger foods were served by Back Door Catering and paired with drinks compliments of Names and Numbers . It made for a festive affair. Stephan Isberian created a rug-related, wall-to-wall scavenger hunt that had all the ACRA members aggressively searching the stacks of carpets for the correct clues. Kim Moore from The Aspen Club won the grand prize, a beautiful rug worth several thousands of dollars.
The food was magnificent (especially the meatballs), the setting unmatched, the company was stellar and we almost, —almost, splurged for a beautiful floor tapestry. We can’t wait to see what ACRA comes up with for next quarter’s event.

The organizers of the Moab Skinny Tire Festival asked me to pass this on. It’s a great event, which I’ve attended a number of times, and a good opportunity to get in some fun, early season training. Money raised goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Moab Cancer Treatment & Resource Center. I may or may not be able to attend, but I strongly encourage you to. Please contact Beth if you have questions.
We have the Moab Skinny Tire Festival next week. We still have room and the temperatures may be decent

Drink plenty of water.
Water is a natural detoxifer. It helps counteract the dehydrating effects of travel or drinking alcoholic beverages and it amy also help satiate your appetite since thirst is often mistaken for hunger.
Avoid taking seconds.
Fill your plate once with the food you enjoy the most and then Stop! Eat slowly and enjoy the unique flavor of the holiday foods.
Bring a vegetable tray to parties.
Use unusual festive vegetables like red, green, yellow and organge peppers, asparagus, snow peas and mushrooms along with the traditional favorites like carrots, celery, radishes etc. Then be your biggest fan and eat more of them than any of the high calorie snacks like chips and dips, cheese and crackers, pate’s desserts, cookies and candies. Use non fat yogurt in place of sour cream or salad dressing for a lighter dip.
Have just a few bites of your favorite dish or dessert. A small amount can be just as satisfying when you taste it mindfully.
Poistion yourself away from the food.
When you are at a party so you are not constantly tempted. Calories add up quickly. If you have a tendency to stand by the food table and just snack, you could find yourself eating 1,500 to 2,000 extra calories without realizing it and that won’t include the drinks or the full course meal to follow.
Bring a festive fruit basket.
to parties or to work for everyone as an alternative to sweets and candy treats. If you feel obligated to try a friend’s homemade specialty, take a small bite of the treat and savor it. No need to eat the entire thing.
Try one day of fasting or detox per week.
during the Holidays to give your body a rest from food. Vegetable and fruit detox progrmas work the best.
Take time for yourself.
Although spending time with friends and family is essential, it’s also important to set aside some time every day for yourself to relax. Try practicing deep breathing (Chi Gong) exercises when you feel stressed out.
Don’t set unrealistic goals.
Aim to exercise 30 minutes a day instead of an hour. Enlist a friend to exercise with you. Walking and talking with a friend can be a great way to burn extra calories and reduce your stress level.
Use alcohol and caffeine in moderation.
These substances will only create anxiety in the long run by adding to your feelings of stress and by depleting your nutrient base. Try drinking hot herbal teas instead of coffee and keep the number of alcoholic drinks to a minimum.
If you your stress level is high, supplement with extra B vitamins.
These nutrients help support the adrenal glands and reduce the effects of stress. B-vitamins convert food to energy and aid in relaxation. They can used in addition to your regular vitamin-mineral supplement during stressful times.
Listen to relaxing music.
Studies prove that music can sooth the nerve4s and restore energy levels in the body. Try classical music to restore and relax your nervous system.

I am writing to thank everyone who participated in our very special 30th anniversary celebration we held at the Club this past Tuesday. The event which was called ‘Pursuing Possibilities’ as it benefited three extraordinary individuals in our community: Amanda Boxtel, Leah Roland and Kasie Burtard was a tremendous success.

Though the kindness and generosity of the over 600 people who attended, Amanda, Leah and Kasie, who each have spinal cord injuries, raised over $100,000 of their $224,000 goal to allow them to travel to India and receive a promising stem cell therapy.

We hear a lot about how Aspen has lost its soul over the years. Those who attended the event on Tuesday know that the heart and soul of Aspen is very much alive and well.

Amanda, Leah and Kasie’s quest is a dramatic metaphor for the journey we are all on. We are a community dedicated to performance and achievement at all levels. Aspen has always had openness to non-traditional healthcare and the amazing height of human possibilities. In the thirty years the Club has been in business, many treatments that were once on the fringe of acceptability have now become mainstream.

This fundraiser was more than helping a few deserving people in our community achieve a better life; it was about creating a better future for all of us, starting with these three early pioneers. Because of this, this event was important to all of us here at the Club and the larger Aspen community.

I never cease to be awed at the caring, the generosity and the love in this community. Thank you all once again for helping us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Aspen Club and the timeless anniversary of human ingenuity and the boundlessness of the human spirit.
Sincerely,
Michael Fox CEO

ASPEN, COLORADO—This past Tuesday, the Aspen Club & Spa (ACS) staged a wildly successful 30th Anniversary and Benefit Party to send three traumatic spinal injury survivors—Amanda Boxtel, Leah Roland, and Kasie Burtard—to India for stem cell therapy.
The event saw 600+ participants raise over $100,000, with donations continuing to come in. In one particularly exciting auction, an adorable Labrador puppy went for $13,000.
Aspen Club chief executive officer Michael Fox described the Pursuing Possibilities fundraising event as “more than helping a few deserving people in our community achieve a better life—it’s about creating a better future for all of us, starting with these three early pioneers.”
The lively event at The Aspen Club & Spa on Tuesday night included a poker tournament, a live auction, a silent auction, and live music. Aspen Club marketing manager Casey McConnell called the turnout “amazing” and the event ‘the party of the year.”
Amanda recently returned from India having undergone human embryonic stem cell treatment. After almost 16 years of paralysis, her body is coming alive and hope is now a part of her vocabulary!
Amanda will return for ongoing treatment in January. Leah and Kasie will follow in Amanda’s footsteps by traveling to India for stem cell treatments in the spring of 2008.
Donations are still being accepted on behalf of the three recipients. Go to www.amandaboxtel.com to donate or call Amanda Boxtel at (970) 927-3630.
In speaking about their goals, event beneficiaries Amanda Boxtel had this to say: “I want to feel fresh cut grass under my feet” and “slow dance, heart-to-heart with my boyfriend.”
Leah Roland said “I want to hike up the mountain again.”
“Amanda, Leah and Kasie’s quest is a dramatic metaphor for the journey we are all on. Being able to help facilitate their quest,” said Michael Fox, “is a blessing to all of us.”
