Dirk’s Profile.

I started really working out in college while on the track team as a pole
vaulter. I started seeing the changes in my body and it became a big part of my life
style. Not just for the physical aspect but also the mental as a stress
reliever and a way to ground myself.

I work out 5 days a week mixing in tradition strength training with
functional cross training. I love taking my interest in the outdoors and
getting out as much as possible. Hiking, climbing, telemark skiing and Mtn
biking. It feeds my mind body and spirit. I enjoy getting my clients out and
show them that a good full body workout doesn’t have to just take place
within the four walls of a gym.

I have a diet consist of fresh fruit, vegetable, wheat grass, I love my
wheat grass. I eat a lot of chicken and fish and the occasional burger.
Peanut M&M’s are my down fall. I believe in the philosophy of a life of
moderation not deprivation. Just don’t over do it.

Finding what you really enjoy doing to work your body is half the
battle. Get and stay active. Being active along with a positive attitude is
the fountain of youth as many people in Aspen have discovered.

I became interested in total Wellness back in college and really started
to move more into a holistic approach to a person health and fitness when I
became a Wellness coach in 2004 which has taking my personal training to a
different level. Looking at a persons total wellness from stress management,
weight management, strength training, cardio, nutrition and other area of a
persons life they feel falls under their Wellness umbrella.

I enjoy helping clients develop a wellness vision for themselves and working with them to
reach that vision. The Aspen Club and Spa is a great facility for a person
to reach their best.

Water:
75 % of our bodies are composed of water. The brain is 85% water. It is water that energizes and activates our body. Everyone knows water is good for the body, but which water is the best for our body? How much should we really drink each day? How often should I drink during the day?
3 Reasons to drink Water consistently:
1. Weight Loss
2. Detox the Body
3. Reverse aging

Cafe of Life starts at 5:30pm and runs for about 40 minutes. Suggested donation $20 to go to different local non-profit each week. Every Tuesday through July & August we will discuss one of the Seven Habits for Living Longer. Each week will address a different topic and show you how and why you need to make it a habit.

Seven Habits for Living Longer

A little Zen, anyone?

Neditate. That’s what the bumper sticker said. It took a moment to register, but I realized the same style and layout that has become pretty popular on license plates, stickers, key rings and such, that say “Native” or what have you. This one in particular was for denizens in Nederland, that sleepy town up and away from Boulder.  And is it sleepy, slow and mountain folk friendly, a blast to the past, it reminds me of an old cowboy town that’s lost its saloon and spurs. Nederland is home to those seeking solace from city life, craving do- it- yourself mountain homes, organic groceries and crafty shops. It does have a sense of calm about it, compared to, well say, New York City.  It’s a plethora of all walks. There are alpaca owners here,  one of a kind festivals, band managers, realtors doubling as rock and gem fans,  serious bookworms, environmental educators, acupuncturists, back country skiers and avid nature seekers.

Neditate, obviously a play on meditate. I wonder how many people have bought into its growing popularity. Just sitting for even 5 minutes a day, and emptying the mind like a trash can.  Literally allowing it to become a blank slate. Just focusing on your own breath, being completely present.  Can you imagine nothingness, no thought, no worries, no to-do lists, no what if’s, no whats for dinner plans for just 5 minutes? Sounds pretty darn relaxing to me. People in the east and elsewhere have been practicing mindful meditation for hundreds of years. There must be something to it. How calming, like a day at the spa or a retreat, how healthy for us busy bodies.

Trust me, I know its hard to be still, to just sit with your eyes closed. But we can do this.  Taking time out for yourself, for just a smidgen of the day, can have wonderful effects.  Try a little zen, instead of who, what, where and when.

I have no energy today!

feeling better after a workout

As I sit here at my desk I am feeling exhausted. I was trying to figure out why I feel so wiped out… then it hits me, I missed my workout today! I have been doing personal training sessions with Dirk at the aspen club and he is on vacation this week. Since I have not worked out today I am actually feeling more tired than if I had… It’s so funny how that works… Even when I am feeling tired after a workout at least I feel good…really good… the juices are flowing and my mind is creative and stress free. Now I just feel unmotivated and uncreative. I think I’ll take a walk after work. I’m excited to have my trainer back though!

Aspen Life Packs

I just received the Aspen Life Packs in the mail and I am so excited to get started. I love the look of the box that the vitamins come in, very clean and sleek. Being a busy mom of four young kids, the convenience of the daily packs is going to make my life so much easier. I have been feeling so worn down lately and I really hope to see a difference right away. I ended up getting the Antioxidant Pack. With the kids at school and me running around shopping  errands, I am exposed to a lot of people and places. I find that if I don’t watch my health, I start to feel worn down all the time. The pack has 10 pills, I have been taking 5 with breakfast and 5 with lunch. This makes it a lot easier and with the handy reseal package it’s not an issue. My Doctor recommended I take supplements and when I did a Google search for vitamin supplements I found the Aspen Life brand.
