Colorado’s best spas

The Aspen Club & Spa sits deep in a cluster of swaying aspens—already,
as you walk up the path to the entrance, you’re relaxing. And the Aspen Club knows
its setting is too good to be left outside—the 77,000-square-foot spa boasts skylights,
expansive windows, and mountain decor. Click here to watch video

Check in at the sun-bathed front desk and wait to be escorted downstairs, where you can indulge in whirlpools, steam and sauna rooms, and a variety of treatments geared toward the altitude. The Treatment: The spa pedicure ($70), which lasts anywhere from an hour to an hour and 15 minutes, combines the best of all spa elements: a massaging chair, warm
soaking water, a scrub, cooling mask, and leg massage. aspen-massage.jpg After inspecting your toes
and removing all polish and rough spots (hiking and skiing can really do a number
on your feet), the technician scrubs away any remaining impurities and applies a
soothing mask. She’ll wrap your feet in warm towels and let them tingle for five
minutes before the moistening leg massage begins.
Stay Here: Although there’s no spa discount, the Sky Hotel offers $45 passes to
use the Aspen Club’s other facilities. Plus, you’re just a pleasant walk from the club
and spa, which can serve as a good warm-up or a relaxing cool-down. Depending on
the season, the Aspen Club also offers complimentary shuttle service.
Quick Tip: After your treatment, spend some time in the spa’s rustic warming room.
Tuck under a chenille blanket in an overstuffed chair near the blazing fireplace and
ensure that those tootsies get plenty of time to dry.fireplace-tour.jpg

A little Zen, anyone?

Neditate. That’s what the bumper sticker said. It took a moment to register, but I realized the same style and layout that has become pretty popular on license plates, stickers, key rings and such, that say “Native” or what have you. This one in particular was for denizens in Nederland, that sleepy town up and away from Boulder.  And is it sleepy, slow and mountain folk friendly, a blast to the past, it reminds me of an old cowboy town that’s lost its saloon and spurs. Nederland is home to those seeking solace from city life, craving do- it- yourself mountain homes, organic groceries and crafty shops. It does have a sense of calm about it, compared to, well say, New York City.  It’s a plethora of all walks. There are alpaca owners here,  one of a kind festivals, band managers, realtors doubling as rock and gem fans,  serious bookworms, environmental educators, acupuncturists, back country skiers and avid nature seekers.

Neditate, obviously a play on meditate. I wonder how many people have bought into its growing popularity. Just sitting for even 5 minutes a day, and emptying the mind like a trash can.  Literally allowing it to become a blank slate. Just focusing on your own breath, being completely present.  Can you imagine nothingness, no thought, no worries, no to-do lists, no what if’s, no whats for dinner plans for just 5 minutes? Sounds pretty darn relaxing to me. People in the east and elsewhere have been practicing mindful meditation for hundreds of years. There must be something to it. How calming, like a day at the spa or a retreat, how healthy for us busy bodies.

Trust me, I know its hard to be still, to just sit with your eyes closed. But we can do this.  Taking time out for yourself, for just a smidgen of the day, can have wonderful effects.  Try a little zen, instead of who, what, where and when.

Aspen Health Spa Retreat

The pulse of The Aspen Club & Spa is undoubtedly the Health & Fitness center, where members and guests not only exercise their bodies, but also expand their minds and rejuvenate their spirit through fitness training, mind/body classes and an array of other progressive offerings.

The Health & Fitness Center is equipped with the finest equipment, including free weights, Cybex weight machines, Spinning bikes, stairsteppers, treadmills, a state-of-the-art Pilates studio and more. New equipment includes the Cybex FT 360 Functional Trainer, which allows a person to get a full-body strength-training workout with the use of just one machine. Others machines include full-body and regular PreCor Ellipticals. The Aspen Club & Spa carries the Hammer Strength line in addition to Cybex.

Also centrally located in the Health & Fitness Center is the fitness studio, where daily classes offer cardiovascular training and conditioning for all fitness levels through such classes as Ski Conditioning, Guts-n-Butts, and Sculpt-n-Stretch. All Terrain Spinning classes are offered on the cardio deck.

The specially designed mind/body studio with a suspended floor and adjustable lighting encourages relaxation during yoga, meditation and Pilates Mat classes.

Beyond this core area, the Health & Fitness Center includes an indoor lap pool, five tennis courts, racquetball and squash courts, and a full indoor court for basketball and volleyball. The Health & Fitness Center also offers post-workout amenities like luxurious locker rooms with steam and sauna, and indoor and outdoor whirlpools.

Included in the Health & Fitness Center’s list of services are unique offerings such as:

Gyrotonic Expansion System: The latest workout innovation, the Gyrotonic machine works major muscle groups without bouncing or jumping using the key principles of gymnastics, swimming, yoga and ballet. It focuses on sweeping, fluid, circular movements that promote strength, flexibility and endurance. Like Pilates, Gyrotonic emphasizes the placement and alignment of the body, and is about the quality of the movement, not the quantity. Unlike Pilates’ linear qualities, Gyrotonic allows users to twist, turn, bend and stretch using pulleys and resistance provided by the Gyrotonic machine. Aspen Club & Spa trainers will lead private and semi-private sessions.

Personal Training and Mental Performance Training: Work with a certified personal trainer and establish exercise goals to ensure a safe and effective program; customize a take-home program; or work with a psychologist to enhance performance in the workplace or sports arena.

Swimming Lessons and Water Fitness: Complete evaluation and coaching of all levels to perfect the efficiency and performance of your stroke, as well as group aqua aerobics classes.

Meditation, yoga, Qi Gong and Tai Chi: Learn meditation techniques to neutralize mental, physical and emotional stress, helping to achieve balance and inner calm. Yoga programs focus on breathing, as well as stretching and suppling of the spine by incorporating a variety of yoga disciplines. Qi Gong is the ancient Chinese form of self-healing that utilizes breath, movement and visualization to promote relaxation, balance and increased circulatory energy. The practice of Tai Chi incorporates the Chinese principles of motion to promote organ health, which lead to increased strength, flexibility, proper balance and mental acuity.

Tennis Lessons and Clinics: Guests and members can work on any aspect of their game with an Aspen Club & Spa tennis professional or participate in various drill classes and group clinics available for three to six people.

Women’s Programs: These offerings include individualized fitness programs for osteoporosis prevention and menopausal cardiovascular risk control, a new pre- and post-natal fitness class and twice-weekly weight-training clinic.

In need of Respite

I am dreaming of a beach right this very moment, with its sandy white shore and warm, green blue waves gently lapping each other, creating a calm, rhtyhmic sound. The sun is beating down on my skin as I stretch out on a towel, the aqua sky above is cloudless and I am alone, it is so serene I fall into a deep sleep. That is not going to happen today, so instead I am dreaming of being wrapped in warm mud. My body is sore and aching, so I am picturing a strangers hands massaging my back, arms and neck. An image of hot stones along my spine pops into the picture. Next I am swathed in a white terry robe and am relaxing my face muscles for a cleansing, soothing facial. My toes are soaked in lilac water as I get a pedicure, and I can almost taste the chicken salad and fresh fruit I am going to have for lunch when I am done.

This has been a most excellent adventure, a complete dream. Funny enough, I have never stepped foot inside a spa. I hear it is wonderful, and more and more people are choosing to pamper themselves, men and women alike. Why shouldn’t we take a moment to indulge in some peace and quiet? Many people don’t take the time to do this, or pehaps they think they don’t HAVE the time. But they do. Of course money could be an issue, some might ask, Am I worth this? And the answer is, “Yes, absolutely.” I truly beleive if we took a little more time to take care of ourselves, our lives would be easier, our muscles less sore. We’d be more calm while sitting in traffic. We might not yell at the kids at the drop of a hat. While I can’t hop over to the spa this moment, perhaps I can eat better today, do a few neck rolls, breathe deeply, and drop a hint to a loved one of what I’d like for my next birthday. I can’t think of a better gift than a day at the spa, second only to immediate transport to a beach on Aruba. Deb Weisman
