Do you ever stop and think about your breath? Probably not. As we go throughout our days and our busy lives, our breath comes and goes naturally. Ponder this thought-have you ever been scared, or anxious? The breath will become short and quick. This is a reaction to a situation. When we exercise, our breath speeds up as does our heartrate. At night, our breath becomes slower as the body prepares to wind down. Studies have shown we use only a small capacity of what our body’s main breath muscle, the diaphragm, can do. Taking deep breaths is very healing for the body. The saying “take a deep breath” has a lot of meaning to it. Pranayama is the word for mindful breathing in Yoga. It is the practice of really listening to the breath, filling up from the bottom all the way to the top, inhaling and exhaling deeply, affecting energy all over the body. With mindful breath, we are regulating our very complex systems in the body. Try taking a few deep breaths at any time during the day and feeling the experience. Closing the eyes might help you turn your focus inward and allow you to just be. Practicing mindful breathing is a wonderful thing, I invite you to give it a go, for better mind and body health.

Not just in my body, but I wasn’t sleeping as well, I felt totally unbalanced and had very little energy. I realized how important Yoga is in my life, and for my well being in general. It’s no secret exercise keeps us young and fit, but the de-stressing benefits are monumental. Exercise is a great release. Who ever came back from the gym and said, “Gee, I wish I wouldn’t have worked out today.” The firm that coined that marketing slogan is right on the money. I feel so much better when I work out, no matter how tired I am or how much I don’t feel like getting in the car and going. That is half the battle. But I’ve realized that sluggish slug feel is worse, so the next time I skip out or notice 3 days have gone by since I’ve put on some shorts or tennis shoes, I am going to remember that slogan. I guess “Just do it” works too. Stress is a huge cause of health ailments in this country, and if all it takes is a 30 minute walk or just 15 minutes on the cycle, I will choose that anyday over a trip to a doctors office. Be well, and keep with it, exercise works!
Relevant Tags:stress, wellness program, workout, yogaI noticed this morning that I felt totally balanced. I laughed at the irony of that because lately I have felt physically unbalanced. My eating has been much worse these past few weeks and I’ve feeling exhausted and a bit unmotivated. I am pretty sure it is the change of the season, it seems this happens every spring.
Yet during my morning yoga session I felt total peace and balance. Perhaps this is the case that the mind starts and the body follows. The past few weeks I’ve been making some decisions on how I want my life to look in the near future. I’ve let go of a few things that haven’t been working for me, and I’ve feel like I have a clean slate. Hopefully my body will follow this example and start following suit. In the mean time, I am getting extra sleep and starting to clean up my diet. And I also think yoga will be key into getting and maintaining that calm, balanced life that I am striving for.

Fitness and staying in shape has always been important to me. As a young girl I was a gymnast, in high school I ran track, played hoops and was a pretty darn good soccer player…until I injured my knee, tearing my anterior cruciate ligament. That ended my hard core sporty gal days, but I wanted to stay in shape. Alas, working out in a stale gym environment was not for me. Exercise should be fun! I wanted a workout where I could reap the benefits for mind and body while feeling great.
I discovered Yoga through friends, and found it literally, “ah-mazing.” Not only does Yoga tone and strengthen the entire body, but it calms the mind. In this crazy world, how often do we stop and connect with our breath? When one steps on the Yoga mat, and dedicates that hour or 30 minutes just for them, the world melts away. Stretching, bending, moving with grace, all in sync with our sweet breath and vital heartbeat. In addition to increased flexibility, agility, and a sense of calm that soon graces the face of practicing yogi’s, did you know Yoga has health benefits such as flushing out the organs and supplying fresh oxygen and blood throughout the body? It can also be said Yoga provides a connection between ourselves and this earth, a historical spirit and practice that’s been around a long time. Perhaps the greatest thing about Yoga is that anyone can partake, it transcends age and location, sex or body type, and any time to start Yoga is a great time. Enjoy, and Namaste. Deb Weisman
